Ballymena-based financial advisory firm Mitchell & Wilson Financial Planning has entered a new chapter, with Liam Wilson becoming Director of the business and signalling ambitious plans for future growth.
Born in New Zealand and raised in Queensland, Australia, Liam relocated to Ballymena just over a year ago, reconnecting with his family roots. He now takes charge of the well-established advisory as it enters a new era, focused on long-term development, client relationships and community engagement.
Liam brings significant experience to the role, having built and led a successful financial advisory practice in Australia before making the move to Northern Ireland. His venture into the world of financial planning came after a promising provincial rugby career was halted by a significant injury.
“One of the most important things to me back in Queensland was the community I came from, and it meant a lot to see the impact of my work on the people I lived amongst. I’ve felt the same sense of community and welcoming over the last few years in Northern Ireland, so I’m grateful to give back.
“My grandparents moved to Australia from Ballymena, and I was always raised with an affinity to my heritage. We feel very lucky to have made this move and I feel proud to be working with such great clients, helping them with their goals and making them a reality.”
In addition to his professional role, Liam is also Vice Chairman of Ballymena United Football Club, reinforcing his involvement in the local community and business landscape.

The transition marks a milestone for the firm’s founder David Mitchell, whose influence and dedication have shaped the business into a trusted name in financial services. David will remain closely involved with the practice, ensuring continuity for clients and staff alike.
He said, “It has been clear from the outset that Liam is exceptionally well placed to lead our firm into its next chapter and I’m proud to be working alongside him for that journey. His experience has helped ensure a smooth and reassuring transition for everyone involved.
“What’s been especially encouraging is the shared commitment we have to our clients and to the future of the practice. I look forward to continuing to work together and being part of what the future holds for the firm.”
Mitchell & Wilson Financial Planning is a partner practice of St. James’s Place, one of the UK’s leading wealth management organisations, providing clients with access to a broad range of financial expertise and resources.
Having opened in May 2006, the business specialises in pensions, investments and inheritance tax planning. The company looks after 200 families, many of which being multigenerational families that have trusted the business since its inception.
Liam says the focus now is on building on strong foundations while looking firmly to the future.
He adds, “This is about honouring the legacy that has been built by David, while positioning the firm for the next phase of its journey. Over time, I’d like to see us expand our presence to support more local families, business owners and professionals to plan confidently for their futures.
“If we can grow the business while making a genuine difference in people’s financial confidence and wellbeing, that will be a real success for us.”
With established client relationships, the continued involvement of the founding team and renewed plans for growth, the firm is positioning itself to expand its reach while maintaining its focus on trusted, personal financial advice for individuals, families and businesses across the region.
