The Irish Association of Funeral Directors (IAFD) has announced the appointment of Fintan Cooney as its new President. A long-standing and widely respected member of the Association, Fintan brings extensive board experience, a deep commitment to professional standards, and a clear vision for the future of funeral service in Ireland.

Manager of Fanagans Dundrum, he has served on the IAFD Board for the past six years, including five as Membership Officer. Speaking about his appointment, Fintan said: “I am honoured and excited to be taking on the role of President of the Irish Association of Funeral Directors at an important time for the profession. We face both challenges and opportunities, and I want to lead the Association in addressing these.”

A seasoned leader, Fintan brings a wealth of governance and voluntary experience to the Presidency. He believes that effective leadership begins with listening, clear communication, and leading by example. His key priorities for his presidential term include advancing the recommendations of the IAFD’s strategic review, with a strong emphasis on the Association’s Excellence Programme and Education Programme.

Fintan added: “In an unregulated profession, the IAFD plays a vital role in setting and maintaining standards. Our focus is on supporting our members to deliver the highest levels of service and to protect the excellent reputation of our profession.”

A major focus of his tenure will be the continued rollout of the IAFD Excellence Programme’s self-audits and the progression of reforms to the Education Programme to ensure it better meets the needs of members. To strengthen engagement across the country, he also plans to host regional member meetings in Munster, Connacht, and Ulster in 2026.

Speaking about funeral directors that are not yet members of the Association, he said: “I would encourage funeral service providers who are not yet members to consider the benefits of joining the Association. Only IAFD members are independently audited to confirm that they operate in line with the European Standard for funeral services. If you aspire to that level of excellence, I would encourage you to join the IAFD.”

IAFD membership also provides access to a professional indemnity insurance scheme, a range of affiliate partnerships including fuel, live-streaming services, and legal advice.

Looking ahead, he remains confident about the Association’s ability to evolve. He said: “We will continue to adapt to the changing needs of our profession and our members. Through our Excellence Programme, we ensure our members are ready for the regulation of our profession if and when it comes.”
