New regulations within the gambling industry in Northern Ireland are expected to hit the online casino industry to an extent not yet known.
Ever since the widespread use of smart phones, the online gambling industry has gradually grown in size and in profit margins and now in 2021, the industry is booming. The global online gambling market is expected to reign in huge profits till 2025, mostly due to the opening up of the USA gambling market following the increasingly expanding list of U.S. states where online casino betting is legalised.
However, both Northern Irish and UK governments are planning new legislation which will likely limit the space for market growth online. If rumours are to be believed, in the United Kingdom, online casino slot games will be limited to £2 per spin (currently players can bet £500 on a single spin), whilst VIP schemes and offering losing players free spins and other bonuses will become illegal.
In Northern Ireland, it remains to be seen what effects the changes to online gambling laws in the country will have. Where both the UK and Northern Ireland are concerned, any major changes will not come into effect instantly, it is likely that it will be at least two years before large scale changes are expected to be implemented by online gambling operators.
Online Casino Gambling as a Business Model
The top online gambling operators make billions of pounds per year. Bet365, one of the largest operators in the UK, which has focus areas in sports betting, online casino gambling and esports, reported a total revenue of £2.8 billion last year. UK and Northern Ireland casino and gambling laws, as they are, are clearly beneficial for gambling operators.
Other highly esteemed online casinos such as those operated by L and L Europe continue to generate large profits too from their UK oriented online casino sites. Flutter Entertainment reported a tripling of profits for the first half of 2021 with net revenue in the US alone standing at £1,285 billion. Due to the expected change in gambling legislation in Europe, both Flutter and Bet365 are targeting the US market in the immediate future.
Operators are expecting new legislation to have a negatively impact on them and this is one of the main reasons why they are diverting the majority of their resources to setting up in the USA.
When Will The New Laws Become Active?
According to the Communities Minister, Deirdre Hargey, new legislation will be introduced in the upcoming weeks, but a further update dealing with online gambling has been given an estimation of two years before it will come into full effect. Given this, it is likely that whole scale changes will be made to the online gambling sphere in Northern Ireland.
We expect changes to be announced years before they are implemented, this will give online gambling operators the time and opportunity to adhere to any new rules long before they are forced by law.
