Accelerating the government’s journey to the cloud

Government cloud adoption is still an aspiration rather than a reality. Whilst progress has been made, traditional datacentres are still being used by a number of public sector organisations, despite knowing the benefits of cloud.

Barriers to transformation

Moving away from on-premise datacentres however does not come without its complexities. Applications are either exposed to risk during the process with additional complexity surrounding integration of services and shared data.

To add to that, others are grappling with resource and skills constraints with 47% of public sector leaders stating a lack of in-house resources is a barrier to achieving their cloud strategy – that’s according to Fujitsu’s latest Public Sector Report.

Simplifying the complexity

Some public sector organisations are equipped and ready to overcome these hurdles, but other agencies and departments are facing competing priorities.

This is where public cloud vendors including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft and Oracle are now turning to organisations like Fujitsu.

Fujitsu has expertise and knowledge to simplify migrations, backed by over 50 years’ experience of managing critical national IT systems that keep the UK running smoothly – every day.  Understanding of citizens’ needs is critical to achieving true digital transformation which means employing a strategic expert ICT partner can help you met user demand.

The majority of public sector departments (49%) want to work with a small number of vendors with the credibility and capability to support their transformation.

In practice, there are always elements that appear impossible to move to the cloud. For example, Fujitsu has a relationship with Crown Hosting to address ‘residual legacy’. Crown Hosting is also the alternative if a private cloud solution is needed in parallel.  For AS400 and mainframes, which are the most difficult of all in the move to the cloud, Fujitsu has its own tool (uk.Fujitsu.com/progression) to convert ‘old code’ into modern languages, ready for moving to the cloud – this is a truly transformational approach for the very difficult aspects of legacy and is unique to Fujitsu.

Getting you there faster

Sometimes, finding the right resources with the right skills at the right time is all that’s needed, particularly if you are thinking of a managed cloud service as a longer-term solution.

To meet the unique and evolving requirements of the United States Federal, State, Local, and Tribal governments, as well as contractors holding or processing data on behalf of the US Government, Microsoft offers Office 365 US Government Community (GCC) services which is also known as Microsoft Office 365 GCC. Office 365 GCC operates in conjunction with Azure Public Cloud. You can learn more about the Office 365 government pricing and Azure Services.

As an AWS Managed Service Provider (MSP), Fujitsu is part of a network of accredited partners who are skilled at delivering AWS cloud and infrastructure migration and can deliver added value by offering proactive ongoing monitoring, automation and management of the environment as a managed service. Put simply, Fujitsu’s Cloud Service for AWS can help you blend the old world to the new – safely and securely.
