A community project in County Fermanagh that brings together senior citizens, young people and local organisations through gardening and environmental action is set to expand after it received £1,000 from Power NI through the company’s Brighter Communities programme.
The fresh funding will be used to develop the Tempo Men’s Shed garden and outdoor learning space; there, members build skills in composting, planting, soil health and sustainable growing and get the chance to learn from one another.
The initiative will also support the community group’s wider work improving the environment through handcrafted planters, flower displays and vegetable beds that are made from recycled materials. Many of these line the town’s popular walking track, enhancing a well-used public space for residents and visitors alike.
Alongside environmental improvements, the local project aims to address social isolation and promote positive mental health by bringing together Men’s Shed members, schoolchildren, youth groups, sports clubs and those experiencing mental health challenges to work on shared community projects. Future plans include partnerships with schools and youth organisations to raise environmental awareness, pass on practical skills, and strengthen local connections.
A spokesperson for Tempo Men’s Shed said: “This support from Power NI will allow us to further develop our garden and outdoor learning space while creating more opportunities for people to come together, learn new skills and enjoy the benefits of gardening. And as well as improving the environment, these activities play an important role in supporting mental health, wellbeing and social connection.
