Power NI and Antrim’s ladies are a winning combination

Antrim ladies’ team received a Helping Hand from Power NI, part of Energia Group, on their way to securing this season’s All-Ireland Junior Football Championship title at a sold-out Croke Park in Dublin.

Maria O’Neill proved to be the match-winner for Antrim as her last-gasp point earned her side a record-equalling fourth All-Ireland Junior Football Championship title over Carlow.

Antrim led 1-5 to 0-6 at the interval but in the second half Carlow clawed their way back into contention. The prospect of a replay loomed large when a goal by substitute Megan Townsend on fifty-nine minutes got Carlow back on level terms before O’Neill popped up to knock over the all-important winner with only fifteen seconds remaining on the clock.

Power NI

Prior to the historic result the team received £1,200 from Power NI through the company’s Helping Hands initiative. This was used by coaching staff to cover the cost of new training equipment and footballs as they prepared for their appearance at the national stadium.

The success made up for the disappointment of last year’s title decider defeat by Louth as the Saffrons held their nerve to land the title and cap off a hugely successful campaign.

“I want to say a big thank you to Power NI for once again providing us with funding,” said Antrim’s Senior Ladies’ Manager, Chris Scullion. “We’re pleased that we could repay our very generous sponsors by beating Carlow and lifting an All-Ireland title once again.”

Power NI employee Amy Bennington was one of those who nominated Antrim LGFA for Helping Hands funding. She added: “I am very proud to work for a company that allows staff to support local community teams and organisations. It was great to see the team receive funding from Power NI to help with their preparations for such a big occasion.”

For well over a decade, Power NI’s Helping Hands initiative has supported grassroots sports clubs and community organisations across Northern Ireland, providing funding for equipment, activities and initiatives that help local groups grow and create opportunities. The success of Antrim LGFA highlights the important role that local clubs, volunteers and community support play in helping young people and athletes reach their potential.
