Good Relations Week delivers multi-cultural showcase

Good Relations Week 2020 has been hailed by organisers as the largest ever cross-community and multi-cultural showcase of arts, history, music and culture.

Co-ordinated by the Community Relations Council, over 120 groups and organisations delivered a virtual programme of over 290 online events and digital content that celebrated 30 years of peace building and cultural diversity.

The virtual celebrations showcased exhibitions of art and photography, storytelling and personal testimony, online discussion panels, podcasts, archive video and new short films on the theme ‘Celebrating Our Journey, Embracing Our Future.

Event organisers that included the Education Authority, the Irish Football Association and Libraries NI, as well as all 11 local council areas, explored topics such as tackling sectarianism and racism, cultural diversity, dealing with the past, faith, sport, young people and language.

Nisha Tandon, Board member of the Community Relations Council added: “This year’s virtual Good Relations Week has delivered our largest ever programme of events and the biggest ever cross community and multi-cultural showcase of arts, history, music and culture.

“Thanks to all of the groups and organisations who contributed to a brilliant week celebrating 30 years of local good relations efforts by pulling together such an impactful and entertaining programme of over 290 events.

“We hope that Good Relations Week 2020 will have inspired people to reflect on how far we have come as a society over the past 30 years, and how much work we still need to do to tackle sectarianism and racism and promote cultural diversity to achieve a shared future for everyone.”

Good Relations Week is supported by The Executive Office and contributes to delivering the Together: Building a United Community Strategy. The Week is organised by a steering committee comprising Department for Communities, Department of Justice, Education Authority, Libraries NI and Cathedral Quarter Trust
