Foyle Port has welcomed a delegation of Fine Gael elected representatives to Lisahally as part of an in-depth fact-finding mission on the investment potential of the Port.
The grouping included TDs, Senators and local Councillors who visited the Port on Friday, toured the quayside, warehousing and industrial facilities and wider landbank earmarked for new investment. The briefing by the senior leadership team also included an update on how the Port was diversifying its operations, ongoing work around marine tourism and meeting its climate change responsibilities through its decarbonisation strategy.
Brian McGrath, Chief Executive, Foyle Port said today: “This was a timely visit for the group after the recent recommitment from the Irish government in relation to cross border infrastructure and greater economic co-operation outlined in the National Development Plan.”
“We were pleased to hear that the group recognises the Port has a significant role to play for the development of the North West. The unique location of the Port, the fact that we have a source of renewable energy on-site, and a significant land bank, make us an attractive, investable location. We told the group that we are ready and able to take forward signature projects and be exemplar of what elected representatives on both sides of the border have been talking about for some time.
This is an opportune moment for the British and Irish governments and the Northern Ireland Executive to come together and commit to several Port managed projects which satisfy North-South ambitions. As we move forward and away from the challenges of Covid and the wider disruption caused by the protracted Brexit period, we now have to think about the next five to ten years. Foyle Port has the ability to assist the creation of greater economic prosperity for the city of Derry/Londonderry, Donegal and beyond.
It was also a good opportunity to update the group that decarbonisation and diversification are key strategic priorities for Foyle Port. Our substantial landbank here at the Port and expansion capacity, including up to three million square feet of warehousing, gives us the ability and the flexibility to meet the demands of the likes of the renewables sector.”
We’d like to thank the group for taking the time to engage with us today and we were encouraged by their response in how we can realise potential.”
