Choice Housing has announced a £1.6m investment to deliver a new residential development at Ballyduff Road in Newtownabbey, helping to address the growing demand for social housing in the area.
Delivered in partnership with developer Glenoak Ltd, contractor DTL Construction Ltd and Doherty Architectural Services, the £1.6m project will lead to the creation of 12 high-quality general needs apartments designed to accommodate a diverse range of single occupants, couples, and small families.
Situated off Ballyduff Road in a predominantly residential setting, the site will feature two one-bedroom apartments, seven two-bedroom apartments, two larger four-person two-bedroom apartments, and one two-bedroom duplex apartment.
The announcement comes as social housing remains in high demand across the region. According to the Northern Ireland Housing Executive’s (NIHE) Antrim & Newtownabbey Housing Investment Plan 2024-27, there is a projected need for 1,229 new social housing units across the borough over the plan period.
Choice Group Chief Executive Michael McDonnell said: “This project reflects Choices’ continued commitment to delivering high-quality, sustainable homes that support thriving local communities in areas of acute housing need. A great deal goes into choosing the right location for new homes.
“We need to ensure that every new development not only meets local housing demand, but also seamlessly integrates into the fabric of the existing community. By carefully evaluating nearby amenities, local infrastructure, and public transport links, we ensure our residents have easy access to everyday essentials whilst contributing positively to the surrounding area,” he added.
Designed to integrate with the surrounding area, the timber-frame development features a mix of traditional brick and render external finishes, surrounded by a communal parking area and a mix of communal landscaping, including pathways and gardens.
Each new home will feature gas central heating, double glazing, and fully fitted kitchens, offering bright, comfortable, and energy-efficient living spaces for future residents.
Located in a well-established residential area, the new scheme offers excellent proximity to local amenities and everyday essentials, including nearby retail outlets, pharmacies and schools. Convenient access to public transport links and connections to the Shore Road also ensures convenient travel links to Belfast and Carrickfergus.
The development is expected to be handed over in Summer 2027.
