2020 Marks a Decade of NI Clean Ups

Charity Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful is celebrating 10 years of clean up events across Northern Ireland.  The Big Spring Clean, part of the charities Live Here Love Here campaign, is calling for volunteers to sign up for litter pick events from 1st March-1st May 2020.

Last year was the charity’s best year yet with over 127k volunteers collecting 253 tonnes of litter across 3868 events – an incredible contribution from local communities, schools, businesses and individuals.

Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful has been a pioneer of a cleaner, greener Northern Ireland for the last 20 years, Nicola Fitzsimons from Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful comments:  “The ever increasing public support has been incredible.  Over the last 12 months, media coverage surrounding awareness on waste has been beneficial in bringing to the fore the very real problem of litter that still exists in Northern Ireland – with one in three people openly admitting to littering.

“We want people to come along and experience the Big Spring Clean, feel good and enjoy a day in the beautiful Northern Irish outdoors.  Our hope is that we give people a taster and encourage them to think long term.  We have other ongoing projects such as ‘Adopt A Spot’, where volunteers can ‘adopt’ a local area to care for.  This ongoing approach has the potential to make a real difference to our environment and reduce the amount of litter entering our ecosystem.”

As Big Spring Clean launches its two-month campaign, problematic plastics are high up on the agenda.  With the recent launch of Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful’s Litter Composition Report, highlighting 71% of all litter found is plastic – a pollutant, which is incredibly costly and difficult, if not impossible to remove.  The drive is on to reduce our use of plastics and eradicate them from our environment.  This will help to prevent them devasting coast lines, harming marine life and even entering our food chain – damaging our health.

Big Spring Clean provides a range of opportunities for volunteers to get involved including one-off events which require only a few hours of time.  The website provides an online network where volunteers can register their own clean up events or get useful advice and information about other events in their area – visit www.liveherelovehere.org or contact [email protected] to register.
