The Batman: a top-grossing movie so far in 2022

The latest movie release in the Batman franchise has been a massive success generating over $128.5 million in ticket sales already, becoming the second-highest earning movie in the past two years, coming in after “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, which generated $260 million so far. Warner Brothers’ “The Batman” has already outperformed expectations.

Top-earning box office hits

The highest-earning movies at the British box office are primarily American films or at least US and UK joint productions, with franchises like the Harry Potter sequels dominating. The 2001 release “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” grossed an estimated $974.8 million. Other top earners are the James Bond films, with the five Daniel Craig pictures topping the rank, with Spectre earning almost $880 million at the box office. In recent years, Marvel and DC Comics’ portrayals of comic book characters and superheroes have had massive box office success.

“The Batman” tops the box office

Released internationally on March 4, 2022, Matt Reeves’ ”The Batman” stars Robert Pattinson (as the Batman), Zoë Kravitz (as Catwoman), Paul Dano (as the Riddler), John Turturro (as Carmine Falcone), and Colin Farrell (as The Penguin). Although not the most original interpretation of the series, the movie and its portrayal of Gotham City is incredibly atmospheric. Robert Pattinson’s Batman is more emo than past portrayals of the same character, including Christian Bale, who was far grittier.

Set a few years into his career as the masked crime fighter, Batman is trying to capture the villain, the Riddler, who is targeting Gotham City’s corrupt government officials and law enforcement. Unlike past portrayals of Batman, Robert Pattinson’s character is less of a playboy and more of a brooding recluse who dislikes social interactions. Selina Kyle, or the Catwoman, is played by Zoe Kravitz and is a tough waitress who has a side hustle as a burglar and lady-vigilante.

What makes Batman a hit?

Often the greatest appeal of superhero movie franchises is the villains. But why do we love villains so much? We are intrigued and captivated by narratives like that of the Joker vs Batman. Villains seem to have more freedom and live outside the law. The more powerful a villain is, the more impressive the superhero needs to be. Villains, especially the comic book bad guys like the Penguin, the Joker, the Riddler, have developed into much more interesting characters than their comic book predecessors and grab our attention more than the heroes they battle.

Villains teach us how to act in society and allow for self-reflection, highlighting aspects of society that we generally don’t like to look at, like social inequalities. The portrayal of Batman’s villains is always something that has piqued the interest of viewers, and the latest movie does not disappoint. The appeal of this latest Batman movie is possibly the subtle difference between villains and heroes, with the Batman himself also struggling with this distinction.
