A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO THE NFL: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW
If you’re new to the world of American football, KP Snacks (NI) has put together a beginner’s guide to what makes the NFL one of the most exciting sports on Earth — and why it’s worth watching with a bag of McCoy’s in hand.
🏈 The Basics
The Aim: Two teams of 11 players battle it out on the field, trying to move an oval-shaped ball into the opponent’s end zone to score points.
The Field: The pitch (or “field”) is 100 yards long (a bit shorter than a football pitch), with goalposts and end zones at either end.
The Objective: Score more points than the other team by the end of four quarters.
⚙️ How the Game Works
The team with the ball (the offence) has four chances, called ‘downs’, to move the ball at least 10 yards forward.
If they succeed, they get another set of four ‘downs’ and keep going.
If they fail, the other team (the defence) takes over.
Teams can pass the ball through the air or run with it — making every play unpredictable.
🏆 Scoring Points
Touchdown (6 points): When a player carries or catches the ball in the opponent’s end zone.
Extra Point (1 point): After a touchdown, a short kick through the uprights.
Two-Point Conversion (2 points): Instead of kicking, a team can try to score again from close range.
Field Goal (3 points): When the ball is kicked through the uprights of the goalposts during open play.
Safety (2 points): When the defence tackles an offensive player with the ball in their own end zone.
⏱️ The Game Format
Games are split into four 15-minute quarters, with short breaks and a halftime interval.
The clock stops for incomplete passes, out-of-bounds plays, and penalties, meaning an NFL game usually lasts about three hours in real time.
