A day at the office can really take its toll on our health. Spending seven or eight hours in front of screens, breathing in recycled air from the air conditioner and far away from the healing power of Mother Nature for five days a week can cause a multitude of health problems, from eye strain to poor posture and bad backs and not to mention stress, anxiety and a significant drop in productivity and an increase in sick days. Fortunately, there are lots of ways you can improve the health of your colleagues and employees in the workplace and so, in this article, we take a look at some of the most effective strategies.
Avoid the naughty snacks
You can always rely on somebody to bring in a naughty snack or two, perhaps some homemade treats or a birthday cake, maybe an office chocolate bar round at snack ‘o’clock or a big box of biscuits for dunking in a nice cup of tea. Tempting of course, and very often meant as a kindness, but these treats can add several hundred calories a day to an already static environment. You have to be strict with yourself and honest and supportive with your colleagues when it comes to avoiding these unhealthy routines.
Stay hydrated all through the day
It’s so important to stay hydrated, but it can often be overlooked during a busy day. If you can get through two litres during your working day then you’ll keep yourself in good shape, be less likely to flag around mid-afternoon and also keep the munchies at bay too.
Look after your vision
When you spend a lot of time in front of a computer, you can quite easily end up with eyestrain if you don’t look after yourself. This can lead to migraines, a lack of focus and you may become overly sensitive to light. Always try to make sure you are able to comfortably see the content on your screen; ensure that the screen is roughly one arms length away from your eyes and if you find yourself squinting at that distance, try increasing the display size on your screen. It’s also worth talking to your employer about eyecare vouchers that you may be able to use at your local opticians so you can continue to carry out your work effectively.
Do everything you can to keep moving
Whether you go by yourself or find a colleague to join you, probably the best thing you can do at lunchtime is head out for a walk. Walking will not only burn a few calories but simply getting outside, closer to nature and in the fresh air will recharge you mentally and get you ready for the rest of the day. Try to walk briskly, as not only will you burn more calories, but you’ll do so in a shorter time. Also, avoid the lifts and take the stairs when you can, when you’re chair-bound for most of the day, anything you can do to keep moving is essential.
