Climate change is happening faster than scientists had thought it would. This means that businesses need to adapt to a future in which fossil fuels are not an option. The nice thing about adopting this idea is that fossil fuels are getting very expensive so it will save money in the long run for a company to go green.
There are a number of ways for this to come to fruition. Technology certainly helps. As does a change in company behavior. When you take a multipronged approach, the results will be dramatic. In this article, we will go over some of the ways that you can make your trucking business greener.
Fossil fuel alternatives
One of the biggest areas that can be used to make your trucking business is the fleet itself. This is where most of the company’s fossil fuel usage goes. This is where you should be looking for fossil fuel alternatives to power your trucking fleet
Luckily, there are a couple of options. The most expensive option but one that many fleets are going with is to replace their fleet with electric vehicles. This is a long-term solution since it seems inevitable that combustion engine trucks are going to be obsolete at some point in the future. By making the switch now it makes sense for many companies.
Those that want to use their existing fleet still have an option to go green, too. Going fossil free is now possible with HVO fuel since it is a synthetic diesel made from plant sources so it is renewable. It is a diesel alternative that works in any diesel engine without any modifications being necessary.
Change driving habits
If you can’t change your fleet, you can still cut way back on how much fuel is used by changing drivers’ behavior. This means that you have to train the drivers to do things differently. Ask them to watch their time idling and limit it to no more than five minutes.
Ask them to also change the way they drive such as avoiding sudden stops and rough starts. Driving in a more fluid and smooth manner, will use less fuel and cause fewer emissions.
Go paperless
Even the office of the company can be made to be greener. Going paperless will reduce the cost of paper and also take a lot of the harmful and highly pollutive process of making paper and shipping it out of the equation.
Scan all current documents and create a system to stay organized so that new paperwork can be done digitally. Even using digital signatures is going to reduce the need to have a physical copy of many documents needed in the trucking industry.
Use LED lighting
Between the fleet’s barn and the office, lighting uses quite a bit of energy. Instead of using fluorescent lights, use bright LED lights that use a fraction of the energy of a traditional lightbulb and last much longer.
