The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted many industries in 2020 with many being rocked by the impact that the virus has had on so many areas of life. Interestingly, one industry which has managed to not only survive but thrive this year has been the motorcycle industry with motorbike sales on the rise in the UK.
UK motorbike sales on the Rise
Reports show that motorcycle sales are down globally this year but actually on the rise and by a significant amount in the UK according to press statistics from the MCIA. There were a total of 7,882 new registrations for motorbikes in October 2020 which is up from 6,481 in October 2019 – this is a rise of 21.6%. Additionally, when you factor in mopeds and tricycles, the industry is enjoying a good year with a percentage change of 24.3%.
The Shift Towards Private Transport
So, why are more people buying motorcycles during the pandemic? This can be attributed to a few reasons, but perhaps most prominent is the fact that people are avoiding public transport where possible as it can be hard to maintain social distancing and many are reluctant to travel on a train or bus which is understandable. Of course, cars would be a sensible alternative in this case which suggests that there are other reasons why people are opting for motorcycles.
People Treating Themselves
Another reason why they could be popular in 2020 is that many people are reflecting on their life and taking steps to lead a happier, more fulfilling lifestyle and perhaps treating themselves (especially if they have made savings during the pandemic due to the lifestyle restrictions in place). Many people talk about always wanting to own a motorcycle and perhaps the pandemic has given them extra incentive to finally make the purchase.
Sales Expected to Continue in Q4
It is predicted that Q4 sales will continue to rise as life with the pandemic goes on and with it clear that normal life will not return to normal for a while yet although many will be returning to the office soon so they will perhaps be looking at alternatives to public transport. Now could be the perfect time to buy a motorbike and enjoy all the thrills that this can provide, but new riders need to make sure that it is a decision that is not made lightly and you need to make sure that you have adequate insurance in place.
Motorcycle sales are on the rise in 2020 and it is fantastic to see an industry succeed in these trying times and it could mark a significant shift towards this form of transportation.
