How Have Traditional UK Businesses Adapted Online?

Almost everybody in the UK will have used the internet in their lifetime. We live in a digital age, and the online era has been impossible for everyone to ignore.

As a population, it’s not uncommon to be on the internet at almost any point in the day. Several household and personal devices are now connected to the internet and require the connection to be able to operate. Most of our entertainment comes from internet services. At the same time, many of us continue to use the web to shop or pay bills online, with nearly 60 million across the UK using the internet for e-commerce activities in 2023; a figure that is expected to rise in 2025.

How Can Businesses Maximise Their Presence Online and Be Successful?

While it can be very simple to get online and create a website, it can be a completely different story when it comes to trying to establish a presence and/or footprint that allows people to find you.

The competition is incredibly fierce, perhaps more so on the web than it can be in the traditional UK high street, especially where businesses are able to specialise without the threat of another company offering the same products or services on their doorstep. With that said, the internet’s exposure means potentially more custom from people in other parts of the world.

To achieve this, they can utilise a number of different marketing strategies and techniques. There are examples across multiple industries that operate online and have provided promotions to try and edge out the competition. E-commerce companies may offer a Buy One, Get One Free offer; the service industry might offer exclusivity deals; the iGaming industry can offer bingo promotions or other game bonuses to try and gain a unique selling point. Businesses will do whatever they can to try and attract as much custom as possible, especially when they operate in crowded markets.

Most will also seek to ensure they have the best online practices. This will involve Search Engine Optimization (SEO). By ranking highly for certain keywords, a business can make sure they are among the first when someone looks for a related or exact term on Google, Bing, or any other search engine.

Marketing tactics such as targeted marketing can also be adopted by businesses that begin to operate online and want to increase their exposure to potential customers. They can target specific people who have shown interest, thus allowing them to tailor what they provide to a more receptive audience.

Businesses in the UK Have Had No Choice but to Adapt

Approximately 98% of the UK’s population has access to the internet, a report by Statista has found. This is something that businesses in the country will have found very impossible to ignore.

They would also have found it impossible to ignore the rise of e-commerce in the country. The number of users has continued to rise gradually, reaching 50.5 million in 2017 and is expected to reach 62.1 million by 2025, a further million or so on top of what is currently being experienced.

Most businesses across the UK have decided not to ignore these rising figures, creating online profiles and building websites to help them achieve their business aims, whether that be obtaining profit, increasing revenues, or growing their exposure.
