One study from RAND found how one in five Americans had experienced negative situations like verbal abuse and sexual harassment.

Having a good boss slashed the negative interactions in the work environment by 50 percent. The person at the top sets the tone, the values, and the acceptable behavior in the workplace. When the boss acted disrespectfully toward employees, it led to others acting disrespectfully.

How a Toxic Workplace Can Make You Sick

Studies have shown how a toxic work environment can harm your health. Not only is working a bad job not fun, but it can also lead to health consequences down the road. Your mental health and physical health suffers from a bad job. Many people argue things like, “At least you have a job!” When it can worsen your health conditions, you have to wonder if the money is worth the sacrifice.

One study taken from the University of Manchester looked at people who went from unemployed into an unpleasant job. Researchers surveyed 1,116 people and learned how the people who went from unemployment to an unpleasant job displayed visible stress markers. Individuals who transitioned into a job they liked showed the fewest signs of stress. The people who remained unemployed showed neither improvement nor an increase in stress.

Overall, the study showed how a bad job was as bad as if the person remained unemployed. The study provided some insight into the negative effects of a bad job.

Why Were Stress Levels Indicative of Health?

People who displayed higher stress levels at their job had elevated hormones, cardiovascular, inflammatory, and metabolic levels. Researchers also saw how many of them dealt with high blood pressure and high cholesterol. High blood pressure can lead to a host of dangerous problems like strokes, heart attacks, and diabetes. High cholesterol has an infamous reputation as the silent killer because the person experiences no symptoms before it strikes. It can lead to heart attacks, peripheral vascular disease, and coronary heart disease.

Getting Compensation

In some cases, the challenge of obtaining workers’ compensation because of poor health can prove difficult. If you were to file a lawsuit, the burden of proof rests on you. Doing this hasn’t always proven easy because you have to show evidence. Because the damage happened over years, that isn’t easy to prove.

We spend approximately one-third of our lives working or 90,000 hours of our lives at a job. If you dislike your job that much, look for an alternative. You want to feel happy and completed in the work that you perform for others. Jobs that don’t feel satisfying may indicate to look elsewhere. Failure to do so could lead to a stroke or heart attack down the road.
