The majority of us will at some point have to travel for work. Whether it’s part of a regular commute, to attend an industry event, or to meet face to face with a client. But there are many factors to consider when travelling. Including the distance, cost, and practicality.
Travelling by car
If you have a company car, then it makes sense to use it for business. When travelling for business, the cost of fuel can be reimbursed based on the number of miles travelled. Unsurprisingly, if you’re travelling a long distance, or if you live in a more rural area where public transport links are limited, travelling by car is often the easiest and most cost effective way to travel.
However, travelling by car means there’s a lot of planning on your part – especially if you’re travelling to a new place. While your satnav may say a journey takes 60 minutes it doesn’t always account for delays on the day, or take into account you finding a parking spot, all of which can cause additional and unnecessary stress.
Travelling by train
Whether you regularly get the train from Luton to Bedford or commute from Leeds to Manchester, travelling by train allows you to have some time to yourself. You could spend the journey being productive and getting ahead of the day’s tasks, or you could use the time for more leisurely pursuits like reading or listening to a podcast. And with many trains providing Wi-Fi travelling by train can be a pleasurable experience. Equally if you are travelling with a number of colleagues, train travel offers you extra time together to prepare for a meeting, and many operators offer savings on group bookings.
However, with recent reports suggesting that around eighty trains a day are significantly delayed, they can prove stressful if you have to be somewhere on time. In addition, travelling by train requires additional planning, from finding the nearest stations to your destination to checking the schedule to ensure you have enough time.
Travelling by private hire
At a time when we’re encouraged to social distance, travelling by taxi allows you to stay away from large numbers of commuters. It also offers the benefits of travelling by car, but without the stress and worry about navigating, finding the destination, or looking for an elusive parking spot, and you’ll arrive directly at your destination. However, the practicality comes with a cost. Taxi miles cost significantly more than the cost of fuel if you were travelling by car.
If you are looking to travel by taxi or private hire, then shorter journeys around built up areas, like busy cities will help keep the costs down.
