As a travel-loving couple, my wife and I are always seeking out exciting new adventures to experience together. So when planning a recent trip to Australia, we made it our mission to discover some of the country’s most thrilling activities for couples looking to get their hearts pumping and create lasting memories. After an action-packed two weeks exploring Oz, I’m happy to report our mission was accomplished!
Surfing Lesson
One of our top recommendations for family holidays to new zealandis to try a surfing lesson for two along the gorgeous beaches of the Gold Coast. As California natives used to riding waves back home, we were humbled by the powerful swells and world-class instructors showing us the ropes. Nothing bonds a couple more than the laughs over wiped-out attempts and celebrating the triumph of standing up on your board for the first time together. Just be prepared to be sore the next day!
If surfing isn’t your speed, opt for whitewater rafting along the Tully River in Queensland instead. Trading waves for Class 4 rapids through the stunning rainforest, we held on tight as our guide navigated heart-stopping falls with names like “The Big Momma.” Soaking wet and shaken, we were exhilarated and ready to take on the next rapid! This is a great choice for couples wanting an intense shared experience unlike anything back home.
Of course, one cannot talk Australian adventure without mentioning snorkeling the Great Barrier Reef. While scuba diving the reef is incredible, snorkeling allowed us to plunge into this aquatic wonderland together on a shared voyage of discovery. The kaleidoscope of tropical fish and sea turtles swirling around the coral left us mesmerized. The best part was no experience required – just hop in a boat and enjoy! I highly recommend treating yourselves to a seaplane flight out to the secluded reefs for VIP access.
Land Down Under
For a truly unique couple’s experience to travel to Australia with your partner exclusive to the Land Down Under, sign up for a sunrise hot air balloon ride over the Outback. After helping set up the balloon, we climbed into the basket shoulder-to-shoulder and soon were drifting peacefully above the rolling red desert landscape. Our pilot pointed out wild kangaroos and emus wandering below while my wife captured some incredible selfies with the balloon reflection in my sunglasses – a very “instagrammable” moment in the middle of nowhere!
No visit to Australia would be complete without getting up close and personal with cuddly koalas and kangaroos. Several wildlife parks allow couples to pet, feed, and snap photos with these endearing marsupials. My wife couldn’t get over how soft the koalas’ fur was as she snuggled one named Cindy who was clearly enjoying the attention. Don’t miss this opportunity only Australia can offer to get to know their unique wildlife!
Creek Crossings
While not for the faint of heart, my wife and I also enjoyed getting behind the wheel for some off-roading through the Outback. Bouncing through the rugged terrain in a 4×4, we learned how to handle hairpin turns, steep hills, and creek crossings from a fun local guide. My knuckles were white from gripping the roll bar, but we survived to appreciate the awesome landscape and each other’s dust-covered faces post-adventure.
No matter which heart-pounding exploits you choose, Australia is tailor-made for couples ready to trade lazy beach days for an exhilarating shared experience. My wife and I discovered new thrills around every corner that challenged us individually while bringing us closer as a team. After embracing the excitement Down Under, life back home has never been the same!
