When you buy a new house you expect certain costs. You know roughly how much you will pay in closing costs and you expect to have to put some money into personalized touches such as an MDF architrave and a few coats of paint. However, there are some hidden costs that many new homeowners are not expecting, and can be a bit shocking.
Many people will give you advice and tell you how much things should cost. However, every house purchase is different and what those people experienced may be much different than yours. In this article, we will go over several of the costs you probably won’t be expecting so you can make a budget.
1 – A short-term rental
Although you hope that the timing of the sale of your current home coincides with the closing of your new home things don’t always work out that way. Sometimes your home sale goes quickly but buying the new one gets slowed down for various reasons.
What many people tend to do when this happens is to find a temporary place to stay. Some might be able to find a friend or family member who can put them up for a few weeks. Others will have to pay for a short-term rental to get by.
There are also times when a renovation is necessary before you can move into the new home. It isn’t uncommon for people to stay in a caravan on the property while they complete the renovation. However, it is far more comfortable to stay in a short-term rental as it has all the modern conveniences you need until you can make your move.
2 – An exterminator
When you did your walk through before making an offer, the house would have been presented to you in its best light. This means that if there were any pests about you wouldn’t be likely to have noticed. Once you move in, however, their presence will be unmistakable.
You will then need to call an exterminator to come and fix the problem especially if it is an infestation. For instance, many houses have bed bugs and there would have been no way for you to notice this. They leave telltale signs such as black spots on sheets and there can be a peculiar smell when they are around. You’ll notice these signs after you move in.
3 – Heating and cooling
Most houses that you will likely be looking at buying will not have any air conditioning. With the way that summers have been going lately, you may be in for an added expense to add one to your new home.
There could also already be heating issues that you wouldn’t have been aware of if you looked at the house in the summer. Once winter comes around then you will realize that you will need to pay a technician to come and fix the problem. This can end up costing in the thousands especially if you need to buy a new system.
