Pupils at Friends School in Lisburn have seen their artwork transformed into real-life packaging through a unique sustainability project delivered in partnership with packaging manufacturer Huhtamaki.
The initiative challenged pupils to design labels for fibre egg cartons after taking part in a litter-picking project that explored how waste materials can be recovered, recycled and given a new purpose.
What began with collecting discarded paper and eco-waste ended with pupils holding finished egg cartons featuring their own designs, providing a hands-on lesson in sustainability, recycling and the circular economy.
The project was delivered through the Eco-Schools programme and formed part of Friends School’s ongoing efforts to achieve Green Flag status, the internationally recognised accreditation scheme awarded for young people’s environmental action and learning.
‘Members of the school’s Eco Committee monitored and collected fibrous materials at paper recycling stations across the school. These efforts were complemented by litter-picking activities, where any fibrous materials found were also gathered, helping students understand the impact of waste on the environment and the importance of responsible waste management.’

Building on that experience, pupils were invited to enter a competition to create artwork for Huhtamaki’s fibre egg cartons. The winning designs were professionally printed by Huhtamaki’s Dutch label supplier, Royal Sens, and applied to cartons manufactured at the company’s Dollingstown facility in Country Armagh.
The finished cartons were then unveiled during a special presentation, where pupils were surprised to discover their artwork had been transformed into real packaging products. The cartons were filled with eggs generously donated by Skea Eggs, and presented back to the young designers to take home.
The initiative allowed pupils to follow the complete journey of a packaging product – from waste collection and recycling through to design, manufacture and use. By connecting classroom learning with a real-world manufacturing process, the project brought sustainability lessons to life in a practical and memorable way.
Huhtamaki worked closely with Friends School teacher Mark Williamson, who leads the school’s Eco-Schools activities, to deliver the project.

The project forms part of Huhtamaki’s support of the Eco-Schools programme in Northern Ireland, which is operated by the independent charity Live Here Love Here, formerly known as Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful. Through its sponsorship of the Eco-Schools Litter Topic, Huhtamaki is helping schools across Northern Ireland encourage pupils to take positive action to improve their local environment.
