The Junction Market Celebrates Five Years as Northern Ireland’s All-Season Marketplace

The Junction Market is celebrating its fifth birthday after a weekend of vibrant trading, live music and community spirit at The Junction Retail & Leisure Park in Antrim.

Shoppers turned out to enjoy a special anniversary edition of Northern Ireland’s only year-round outdoor market. More than 50 local traders set up stalls alongside street performers and musicians, while giant birthday balloons, family-friendly photo spots and a cake-cutting moment helped mark the milestone in style.

Launched in 2020 by Urban Events NI in partnership with The Junction, the market has grown into a thriving hub for makers, food producers, artists and small businesses. Remarkably, it has run every single month for five years without a single cancellation and has become a vital part of Antrim’s retail and community life.

For many traders, the market has been a lifeline and a launchpad. Kitchen-table projects have turned into full-time enterprises, with customers returning month after month to support local talent.

Thomas Ferris, Managing Director of Urban Events NI, said: “Markets aren’t just about selling – they’re about community. Over the past five years we’ve created a space that helps people start, grow and connect. Friendships have formed, collaborations have launched, and businesses have been transformed. To see the market thrive and still feel so welcoming after five years is incredible.”

Chris Flynn, Centre Director of The Junction and Chair of Shopping Centres NI, added: “Customers want experiences and connection – things online shopping can’t give. The market has brought vibrancy and discovery, which in turn supports our established retailers. It’s a key part of our long-term strategy to make The Junction a true destination. Partnership has been crucial; Urban Events NI brings creativity and deep understanding of traders, while we provide the infrastructure and vision. Together we’ve built something sustainable that drives both footfall and spend.”

The birthday weekend also gave shoppers a first look at what’s next for The Junction Market, including the Halloween Carnival on 25th and 26th October; a multicultural celebration with markets, a pumpkin patch and family theatre – and a two-day Christmas Market on 13th and 14th December. The market continues its partnership with ArtsEkta, championing diversity and cultural expression.

Thomas continued: “In an era when many retail destinations face challenges, The Junction Market is proving that creative placemaking works. Reliable, community-driven and experience-led, it has boosted local business and visitor loyalty while redefining what an out-of-town retail park can offer. Five years ago we wanted to show that a market could be more than just stalls – it could be the heartbeat of a place. Seeing it thrive today, with traders and customers who feel part of something bigger, proves that vision works. And we’re only getting started.”
