New North Coast Training Course to Boost Women’s Entry into Hospitality and Tourism Industry

A new training initiative in Coleraine is set to empower women from the Causeway Coast and Glens area to explore careers in the Hospitality and Tourism Industry — just in time for the global spotlight of the 153rd Open at Royal Portrush, taking place in July.

The free four-week course, starting Wednesday 28 May at the Causeway Rural and Urban Network (CRUN), is tailored to economically inactive women seeking a route into employment. The programme, delivered each Wednesday until 18 June, is part of the Hospitality and Tourism Employment Academy, an initiative from Women Breaking Barriers Northern Ireland (WBBNI).

Helen Crickard of WBBNI highlighted the success of the broader initiative, which has already supported over 700 women across Northern Ireland.

“Every participant to date has gained valuable skills that improved their quality of life and brought them closer to the job market,” she said. “This new course builds on that momentum and is strategically timed to help women develop the skills and confidence to access employment ahead of the Open at Royal Portrush. We’re not just providing training, we’re providing opportunities,” she said.

The Hospitality and Tourism Employment Academy course will cover employability, confidence-building, workplace skills, and interview preparation, with the goal of helping women transition into sustainable and flexible employment within the hospitality and tourism sectors.

Anne McVicker, from project lead partner Women’s Resource and Development Agency, said: “The Causeway Coast and Glens is hugely important for Northern Ireland’s tourism industry and this is the first course we have run in this area. We want women to feel empowered to take up exciting new challenges that will benefit them and their families.”

The course is part of the broader Women Breaking Barriers project — a collaborative network of women’s centres and community organisations — and is funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF).
