Belfast solicitors Edwards & Co have been providing high-quality legal support to clients across Northern Ireland for more than fifty years. This week, the company announces the appointment of two new Partners who will help take the company forward.
The new Partners – Julie Tierney who specialises in family law and Paul Lenehan who is a commercial disputes specialist – both qualified from Queen’s University Belfast and bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the firm.
Meet Julie Tierney, Partner Edwards & Co Solicitors
Julie Tierney joined Edwards & Company in May 2014 after heading up a busy family department in North Down since 2007.
Since qualifying as a solicitor she has specialised exclusively in matrimonial and family law, advising clients on all aspects of separation.
“I’m finding that pre and post-nuptial agreements are a growing part of my practice especially within the SME sphere,” Julie explained. “Where businesses are partnerships or collaborations, the issue of what happens to the business in the event of a partner getting divorced is very real. So I am finding myself often working with my colleagues in the commercial side of our practice.”
Being appointed Partner is a landmark event in Julie’s career. “I had set my sights on making Partner from the day I graduated,” Julie said. “I felt joining Edwards & Co. was a perfect career fit for me when I joined in 2014, and becoming a Partner confirms that perfect fit.”
Julie is recognised as a leader in her field in Family and Matrimonial Law in Chambers 2018 who said, ‘The simply outstanding Julie Tierney is recognised for her strong track record on divorce and ancillary relief applications. One client says: “She goes the extra distance to meet the realistic expectations of her clients. She is hard-working and exceptionally competent.”
Meet Paul Lenehan, Partner
Paul Lenehan’s route to Partnership has been a very different one to Julie’s.
When he joined the Practice in 2016, he had qualified from Queen’s, worked with another major Belfast-based practice, spent a year in Australia before returning to a family-based practice in Lurgan, and almost been tempted to a practice in England!
As such, Paul brought a wide range of experience to the practice, and has been able to dedicate himself to his preferred area of specialisation, dispute resolution and litigation.
His focus is offering advice to the firm’s commercial clients, advising them in matters of intellectual property, brand protection, defamation, libel, contractual disputes, debt recovery, corporate disputes and construction or property disputes.
“For me, one of the emphases on mediation and resolution within Edwards and Co is very important,” Paul explained. “If a case is best resolved through the courts, we certainly have the depth of knowledge and experience to take clients through that process.
“But often an alternative option in the shape of mediation is the more pragmatic way forward for a client and we have the ability and commitment to provide that through our in-house service The Better Way, championed by Edwards & Co Solicitors Senior Partner, Dorcas Crawford.
“This is a particularly effective route to resolution now that it is supported by Legal Aid.”
Paul also has a great interest in sports law and has achieved a Masters in the subject. “I use this knowledge and experience at the moment to advise sports clubs and individuals on a limited basis, but I aim to build this side of my practice when I feel the time is right for me and Edwards & Co to do so.”
Paul is a Law Society accredited Solicitor Advocate, and his clients have praised him as “Super, patient, hard-working”saying he is “Easy and straight forward, good communications. Professional & knowledgeable staff,” and “A very friendly and highly professional service from front door to top floor”.
