Jenny McConnell, Chartered Management Institute member: VIDEO REPORT

| September 5, 2017

Jenny McConnell was the youngest person to drive across the globe. It taught her leadership skills that she’s bringing to the next generation of leaders in her role at South Eastern Regional College (SERC).

What inspired you to become a Chartered Manager?

I like to be the best I can be; Chartered Manager gave me the recognition that put me at the top of the tree. I’m responsible for professional development at SERC, and I believe that, when you’re encouraging others to do something, you need to be able to do it yourself. Now I can help others to become Chartered Managers.

How did you find the process?

It sharpened my saw. It was a very straightforward and well explained process – the assessor was fantastic. I had to submit an application to become Chartered, followed by a telephone interview a few weeks later.

How has being Chartered helped you in your career?

One of the biggest challenges is engaging your staff and getting them to understand your vision. Chartered Manager status has helped me affirm my vision and get my team behind it.

What would you say to someone thinking of becoming Chartered?

It will help you to engage more with your teams, and to focus in on your commercial acumen and make clearer decisions – that is critical to success.
