With such positive feedback, there was no doubt that the association would return to Northern Ireland’s only purpose built conference centre in the near future.

The decision to return to Belfast was made even easier, with the city just one hour away from London and its compact nature, enabling ASiT to deliver a comprehensive 3-day programme effortlessly, as all the venues and attractions are within walking distance of Belfast Waterfront.

Established links with leading universities and hospitals, the city’s overall ability to accommodate a large-scale event, as well as excellent transport links to serve its international delegates made Belfast the perfect backdrop for the only UK-wide surgical trainee conference for all specialities.

However this time around, the 2014 conference was on a much larger scale with 650 fellow trainees and 30+ exhibitors in attendance. Belfast Waterfront had more than enough capacity to host a comprehensive programme featuring both plenary and parallel breakout sessions.

The conference kicked off to a great start with a very warm welcome from the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Máirtín Ó Muilleoir at the Civic Reception held in the venue’s bar and gallery areas. These bright and open spaces offered spectacular panoramic views of Belfast’s skyline and were suitable to accommodate a record number of attendees in the history of the event.

During the conference, ASiT launched a new mentoring scheme – the first of its kind in the UK. The scheme will enable senior trainees to mentor more junior members throughout their training, enabling them to achieve their maximum potential, whilst developing leadership and interpersonal skills.

The event organisers commended both the Waterfront and Team Belfast on the outstanding level of support delivered in the run-up to and throughout the conference.

Dr Ed Fitzgerald, Conference Director and Past President of ASiT commented “Delivering a conference which is great value both for our members and the association is important, but it is not enough to ensure a successful event. Knowing we had great support and such a helpful team working on our behalf made this experience thoroughly enjoyable and created a truly memorable event.”

“This is my fifth year running our annual conference and I can say without hesitation Belfast’s friendliness, excellent support, value for money, location and conference facilities make it stand out as the perfect business tourism destination,” added Ed Fitzgerald.

Jennifer Patterson, Revenue and Business Generation Manager at the Belfast Waterfront Conference and Exhibition Centre said “It was an absolute pleasure to work with ASiT again and to welcome their members to Belfast Waterfront. The venue continues to play an instrumental role in supporting the socio economic development of the city and hosting the recent ASiT Conference generated over £750K for the local economy. We recognised the importance of such prestigious events and that’s why we’re investing £29.5million in the venue.”
